Hua Hin Rapee Day

Rapee DayOn 7th August each year, Thailand observes Rapee Day, commemorating the passing away of Prince Rapee Pattanasak, the father of Thailand's modern legal system.

For the Rapee Day celebration are invited many government officials. Chief Judge presides over the Rapee Day celebration. Chief Judge lits the candle and incense to respect the Three Gems of Buddha (tradition in the Buddhist religion). Nine Buddhist monks are invited to pray for half hour.

After the prayers Chief Judge praise Royal Highness Prince Rapee Pattanasak who was the son of King Julajom-Klow-Jao-U Hua. He was born on 21 October 1874 (134 years ago). His Royal Highness Prince Rapee Pattanasak went on to study law at Christchurch College, Oxford University. He came back and became minister of justice at the age of 22 in 1896. He held the position for 14 years. During that time, he laid a foundation for the Thai legal system similar to legal system in western world. His Royal Highness has established the first law school in the country in 1897. He taught the students himself.

Royal Highness Prince Rapee Pattanasak has had passed away on 7 August 1920and his last words were” My life is to serve our country”
