Summer Treat with TCM

Hua Hin has been the Royal Retreat town since King Rama XI. It was chosen by the Royals because of a unique micro-climate much less humid than any other Thai seaside resorts. Hua Hin is a destination of choice both for Thai nationals and for foreigners as it offers a peaceful and safe environment appealing to families.

Hua Hin has gained a solid reputation as a health-care oriented resort particularly since the Chiva-Som spa was established in 1995. This renowned centre is dedicated to holistic health, complimentary medicine and lifestyle retreat. Since then, the Thai spa industry has gained an international reputation of excellence and has contributed to integrating alternative medical concepts into conventional medicine. Chiva-Som was conceived to help health-conscious people become aware of how their level of stress can adversely affect their health on a physical, emotional and spiritual level.

With all the environmental changes facing the world today, the need gradually emerged for a healing centre that would serve the Hua Hin residents and the visitors alike. In response to this need, the Sukkasart Healing Centre was established last year. It aims to offer an alternative to conventional health-care and to promote well-being in the community. While this was initially well-received, after one year of operation, the Sukkasart Healing Centre became the Institute of Healing Arts. It is now dedicated to spreading the philosophy of holistic medicine through continuous education and through the teaching of techniques promoting well-being.

The Sukkasart Healing Centre also aims to gather a community of alternative healers in Hua Hin. It is currently focusing on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been integrated in the Thai cultural fabric for centuries. Maurice Lavenant is one of these TCM practitioners now residing in Hua Hin. He was educated at The London School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (U.K) where he studied acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine for five years. He has been in clinical practice for over 15 years and has treated a wide range of conditions while working in the N.H.S (U.K) and in private practice in the UK and in Spain.

Maurice is delighted to share his knowledge of TCM with all the members of the community to help them understand new ways to take care of themselves. For example, food can be a powerful means to help redress energetic imbalances caused by the intense summer heat. In general, meat is hotter than fish except for the delicious shrimps that are warming. By contrast, fruit and vegetables are mostly cooling, while rice is seen as neutral. Therefore, decreasing meat intake and consuming more fish, fruit and vegetables helps cooling the body. Among the fruit and vegetables, the following are particularly beneficial: citrus, apple, banana, celery, cucumber, mung bean, seaweeds, soybean, spinach and watermelon; tofu is also useful while chrysanthemum flower (Ju hua) tea is frequently used to combat heat all over Asia.
The Sukkasart Institute is proud to introduce a basic course presenting the essentials of this ancient Chinese wisdom. Maurice Lavenant will teach the basic concepts of Yin and Yang theory, the five phases of transformation, basic diagnosis methods, essential Chinese acupuncture points, major Chinese herbs, basics of Chinese nutrition, notions of medicated diet and some simple medical Qi gong. This basic yet powerful knowledge can help everyone improve their lifestyle.
