Hua Hin through time

One hundred years ago Hua Hin was a small fishing village located next to a white sand beach. Next to the beach there was a forest of a tall palm trees. Following the international trend for recuperative spa resorts in1920's, Hua Hin became a popular retreat for Thai Royal Family, Bangkok's high society, and affluent foreigners.

When Hua Hin was still surrounded by a jungle the Royal Prince Krompranares Worarithi has asked King Rama VII (Praprok-Klaoy-Jao-U-Hua) to build a residence for Royal Princes and Princesses. This residence is called Klai Kangwon Palace and is used today by HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Royal Prince and Princess (Pra-boroma-wong Thur Borworadet), Prince Sithiporn, Prince Sutas have had their Sukkavet compound build beside the Sofitel hotel.

Hua Hin at that time was called Thamor-Rieng Village which means stone or rock. Later the name was changed to Samor-rieng, then to Laem-hin Village and the Royal Prince Krompranares has changed the name to Hua Hin Village which means rock or stone head.

In the past, Hua Hin residents who were sick had to travel to Petchaburi Province to get a treatment at hospital. As there was no clinic or hospital in Hua Hin at that time, Lord Mayor Prasartsuk has contacted the president of the Thai National Red Cross Krom praya dumrong Racha-nuparp and has asked him to open Red Cross station in Hua Hin in about 1940.

Today Hua Hin is a worldwide know tourist destination. Hua Hin has a University, many primary and secondary schools. There is Hua Hin Education Center and HM the King has opened Occupation Technical Klaikangwon College for under privileged students to learn a profession.

Hua Hin has about 75000 residents, from which about 3000 are foreigners. Hua Hin is visited annually by about 2mln Thai and foreign tourists. They come to Hua Hin to relax at the beautiful white sand beach or to enjoy contact with nature at two big national parks located close to Hua Hin.
